I have firefox set to open a new compose window in tearoff mode whenever I click a mailto link. Unfortunately, the signatures don't show up in this mode. You can test this by adding &tf=1 to the compose url. There is also a tearoff link in the top right of a composition window.

This is definitely something I plan to add support for in the near(ish) future. I was not aware that it's called "tear off" mode, and thanks for the test URL addition.
